Glamour at the 2010 Met Gala

Although award show season is over, we still have events such as the Met’s Costume Institute Gala to thank for providing an array of celebrities in designer gowns to envy and critique.  The attendees of this year’s event came out looking their best, and I must say, there were fewer major flops this time around than I had seen earlier in the year.  Overall, I felt the stars, models, and designers looked glamourous, elegant, and (most importantly) appropriate on the red carpet.  The following were some of my absolute favorites.  Now the only question is: When is my invite coming for next year??

Whitney Port’s Spring 2010 Collection = Love!

Wow!  My sincerest apologies for such an extended hiatus from writing!  I guess my senioritis has kicked in not only in my classes but in my blog as well!  I’ll try to be more on top of my game in the future, I promise.

whitney_portAnywho!  If any of you out there are as *abashedly* huge fans as I am of “The Hills” and “The City” on MTV, you saw the reveal of Whitney Port’s Spring 2010 collection at Bryant Park last night on the show.  As a fashionista who gained her fame through a reality television show, some people may discredit her abilities as a legitimate designer.  However, from what I saw of her show, I would beg to differ!  I have always been a fan of Whitney’s style on The Hills, and I believe her collection showed off her fun and glamorous point of view.

Check out her runway show here.  Her pieces are young, flirty, and a little sparkly: all things any girl would love to be!  Not only that but the girl is a total sweetheart!  How many MTV stars can we say that about?? :)

Socks with sandals?…No. Socks with heels?…Yes?

Who could forget the frilly white socks and the patent Mary Janes we all wore as little girls?  They were sweet, girly, and ever-so cute.  Well, judging by a trend that has grown over the last couple of years, it looks as if socks and heels have maintained some fans over the age of 8.  This look has be seen on the runways since about 2008, and is finally making its way into mainstream fashion.

This is definitely one of those styles that needs to be attempted with caution.  The shoes and socks have to be neutral enough to not be obnoxious, and the height of the socks need to be just right (either just above the ankle or knee high) so as to avoid stubby-leg syndrome.  I haven’t tried out this look yet, but the more I look into it, the more inspired I get to give it a go.  Take a look at some of the right and wrong ways to rock your socks!

Look of the Week 2/18

Picture 11 300x206 Look of the Week 2/18Stylist to the stars, Rachel Zoe, was snapped here by photographer Tommy Ton braving the storm in New York City.

So maybe being drenched in fur and Chanel is out of the question for the majority of us, but what I love about Rachel is her willingness to take risks and push the limits. I love the structure of her jacket and the combination of long necklaces, but mostly I just love the hat. Chances are you won’t see me wearing one around any time soon, but you have to give it to the girl: she rocks it.  Not to mention she has to be warm and cozy, even in that frigid weather!

Jean Paul Gaultier for Target: Almost Here!

targetBeing the broke college kid that I am, I have always loved Target’s cheap but chic fashions, especially when they began partnering with up-and-coming designers to create affordable but trendy collections. When word spread that Jean Paul Gaultier was going to be the next on their list of collaborations, you can imagine my excitement and eagerness as to what he was going to come up with. To think…even I could own a piece of true designer work!  (Okay, okay…maybe it’s a little different.  But still exciting!).

Well! My curiosity can finally be put at ease, as his 20-look collection has finally been revealed in this look book. Maybe some looks aren’t for everyone, but the ability to mix and match all of these pieces and be creative in your styling is what it’s all about!

Now I just have to wait until March 7th when they hit stores to get my hands on them!

Look of the Week 2/8

0548ac5d710f3aae reese witherspoon Look of the Week 2/8I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Reese Witherspoon never lets me down with her chic, cute, and trendy styling.  Reese’s knit jacket and simple flats are subtle but perfect for a casual day out on the town, running some errands.  She’s perfectly proportioned and looks as great and happy as ever.  Can I please spend a day shopping with you Reese??

Also, I’m starting to see a trend among the stars of a shorter, ankle-length skinny jean as opposed to the long and scrunched up style we’ve seen in the past.  Personally, with a 36″ inseam, I am definitely down for the ankle jean, as I can rarely find skinny jeans long enough.  Flats and ankle jeans…perfect for us tall fashionistas ;)

From Project Runway to the Grammys?

As an avid (okay…obsessed) fan of Project Runway, I never miss an episode and always love to see what the designers can come up with when faced with tough challenges, especially those with odd materials.  Two weeks ago, the contestants were asked to create a look out of a potato sack.  Not ideal.  However, what they came up with was, in most cases, super impressive!

SO impressive, in fact, that Lea Michele may have taken note from the winning design for her Grammy dress on Sunday night.  I couldn’t help but notice the similarity between the two dark, tulip-shaped dresses.  Although I’m guessing Lea’s dress was not made out of burlap, it just goes to show that given a little creativity, someone can turn a sack into a nearly Grammy-worthy piece of clothing!

Grammys Fashion Review

Compared to the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards, and the Oscars, the Grammys always offer a more eclectic mix of fashion statements and performances.  My overall opinion of the fashion choices at the Grammys last night is that there was a lot of so-so going on. There really weren’t any looks that were jaw-droppingly gorgeous and unique, and I was let down by some of my favorites who normally dress to impress (what happened Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood??).  That being said, there were still some stars who shone brighter than others.  Here’s a run down of the good, bad, and just plain weird that hit the red carpet this year.

The Lady Gaga

It seems like Lady Gaga can’t fit into any category other than her own.  There is no comparing her fashion choices to the typical starlet, and she likes it that way.  Her red carpet look at the Grammys, deisigned by Armani Prive (surprisingly to some), was literally out of this world.  The celestial look, complete with hand-held starburst and neon yellow hair definitely grabbed attention.  Her performance piece, a sparkling green body suit with inflated shoulders, didn’t leave a ton for the imagination.  Finally, I pity the fool who had to sit behind Gaga in the audience, as she was wearing some kind of lightening bolt headpiece that extended feet into the air.

Whether you love her or hate her, Lady Gaga is keeping us interested time and time again. Her uniqueness and ability to perform will, in my opinion, keep her in the limelight for quite awhile.

Look of the Week 1/27

Blake LivelyAs the temperatures continue to plummet here in Pullman, WA, I am constantly looking for ways to fight back against the snow and ice and somehow remain stylish and warm. Although I’ll admit to continuing on with the played-out trend of UGG boots on occasion (c’mon…have you tried them on?? I need that coziness here!), I’m also in love with the way Blake Lively does “warm” here. The chunky knit sweater paired with the classic wool jacket is so classy, while the plaid tights and over-the-knee boots snazz it up a bit! I’m still on the hunt for a pair of boots like these, that somehow fit in my broke-college-student budget (hints, anyone?). This is definitely a look you’ll see me rockin’ on college hill (although there may be a pair of Yak-Trak shoe chains attached to the bottoms of my boots :/ ).

Golden Globes Fashion Review

It’s a fashionista’s favorite time of year… Award Show Season! The red carpet never ceases to provide a source of discussion and entertainment, and this year’s Golden Globes provide no exception! The stars came out in statement-making looks this year, whether you take that as a good thing or not. There were some definite trends to be observed, including shimmering sequined gowns, asymmetrical silhouettes, and some dresses that looked more like fine art than pieces of clothing. Despite whatever criticism they receive, you have to give the celebrities credit for taking risks in their looks and always trying to impress. That being said, there were definitely some looks I could have gone without seeing (not to mention a whole lot of Mariah Carey’s bust). Check out my personal favs and flops from the 2010 Golden Globes!
